It was her honor and privilege to design costumes and mentor student designers for over three decades. She has twice been named outstanding mentor by the university’s Office of Undergraduate Research. She is a 2018 recipient of the KCACTF Gold Medallion for excellence in theatre education. Her design work for Where Words Once Were was one of sixteen designs selected for publication in USITT’s Theatre Design & Technology, Summer 2018, from the work exhibited in “Design Expo 2018.” Several of the productions she’s designed have also had the honor of being remounted for the KCACTF Region VIII and The Pirated Penzance was also selected for the national festival in 1994. Zublin received her Master of Fine Arts in theatre and drama: costume design from Indiana University. She is a past Chair of Design, Technology and Management for Region VIII. Rule one- silhouettes are based on research from the mid 1880s. Rule two- all of the selected fabrics used had to have multiple colors woven into them. Rule three- the color palette was derived from Seurat’s work. The biggest challenge of this design was a costume that was described in the stage directions as, “The dress opens and Dot walks out of it.” And then later “…she steps back into it, resumes pose…” George’s model Dot, has to step away from her bustle dress which remained standing on the stage while she interacts with an oblivious George. Words can be weapons of hate or messages of love. A single work can make all the difference in the world. Finegan Kruckemeyer's play introduces an isolated world where to control the population, only 1,000 words are allowed at any one time. Often old words like "beautiful" are eliminated and replaced by calculated words such as "photosubmissionization.” As the children of "The City" discover how the rules came into being and at what cost, they enter into a mystery that keeps the play moving forward in a most unusual and hopeful way. The costumes were designed to invoke a time in the future where people have limited resources due to the isolation of this world. Colors were chosen from a palette that could be derived from natural dyes. Juliet is a rebel and non-conformist; she wears mostly 21st century clothing until she capitulates to her mother’s wishes. Other characters are on a different style timeline; the Prince is the most Elizabethan, Tybalt and Mercutio are in the middle and Romeo is closer to Juliet’s style. For several of the characters in the middle of our timeline we created doublets out of modern hoodies. The characters and their stories are connected by Pandora. It’s very exciting to be one of the first designers to design a play; there are no costumes that have to be designed a specific way. Many of the characters were mythological- a dragon, a mermaid, a unicorn, a selkie and Pandora. It is Shakespeare's shortest tragedy and is believed to have been written sometime between 1603 and 1607. For design inspiration I went to Smith and Edwards to check out the various camouflage styles. I’d had the idea that the military needed to have a camouflage that would be unique to this production. I ended up with a German camo and then over printed it with hand prints to create a one of a kind look in the colors of fall and decaying leaves. As a native New Yorker, I grew up with Washington Irving’s story about Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. It’s always a pleasure to design a new play and research it’s origins. Actors who are providing the sound stage a coupe and hijack the actors who are performing the roles. Chaos ensues as costumes are stolen and actors run around in their underwear. The deus ex machina is when all the performers are informed about the inception of the Screen Actors Guild and their rights as performers. The costumes were a mix of the 1930s and how a 100 year earlier period could be created with 1930s underpinnings. find that I am drawn first to either the silhouettes for the costumes or the colors. Both design elements help tell the story of where and when. In the case of The Importance of Being Earnest the research into the mid 1890s presented very specific lines and mass. Therefore I needed to invent a color palette. The colors I chose were all from works by William Morris; the richness of his use of color was the perfect inspiration. Having a well defined color palette allows me to select fabrics that will make the drawings come to life.
